We have the ongoing issues of babies whose mothers experience diabetesin
pregnancy, being given large volumes of formula in the first 3 days to maintain
blood sugars.
Dear Friends:
This particular situation makes me upset. Giving formula in the first
days of life to a baby that already has a risk factor for diabetes only adds
another major risk factor to that baby's life.
While gestational diabetes is not the same as Type I diabetes, many
mothers with gestational diabetes will go on to develop a chronic form of this
disease later in life.
There is so much published on this topic, including a 1994 AAP policy
recommending breastfeeding and delaying the introduction of cow's milk proteins
for babies at genetic risk of Type I. I've included only 3 of these articles; a
google or PubMed search will yield many, many more.
What's wrong with colostrum and skin to skin for keeping a baby's blood
sugar elevated???
