First, I want to thank everyone who replied to my post about the baby
with bloody stools. Lactnet is such a great resource.
I called the mom today, and did tell her she doesn't need an Rx for
digestive enzymes. BUT, she told me she had started working with a
dietician. The dietician felt the Prevacid was reducing stomach acids
to the point that the proteins in his gut were not being digested
enough. Mom asked for something with a reduced impact on the stomach
acids, and her pedi prescribed Axid (?). It has a pretty rapid and
dramatic effect. No more bloody stools almost immediately. She said
she's trying not to feel to hopeful too soon, but... The dietician
also rec. probiotics, which she is doing and I rec them for her also.
We talked about how unsupportive of breastfeeding the GI doc was, and
she said if she needs to go back to a GI doc she'll switch and try to
find one more supportive of her desire to breastfeed.
I did want to share the info about Prevacid though because I had not
heard of it before and think it could be important for these babies.
GERD seems to be diagnosed for every other baby these days, with meds
prescribed and I wonder if we'll be seeing this more frequently?
I'll be checking back with her in a week to see how things are going.
Thanks again for all the replies.
