The first thing that needs to be done is to assess her milk supply
through test weights and tracking how much formula she is feeding each
day. Some women do seem to get their milk supply back after they go off
the pill, others do not. She may need to do a regiment of nursing,
pumping, galatagogues, but we also need to remember that she was
planning for a half supply when she goes back to work. Her baby will
probably get 4 bottles of 4 ounces at daycare while she is gone and she
will probably nurse 2-4 times after work, in the evening, in the night,
and early morning. She may not have time to do the pumping, nursing,
bottles for supplementation, routine until her milk comes back. But then
she may be lucky and find that after a week, things are back. The other
aspect is this baby may go right to bottles if her supply is low -- if
baby will comfort suck at the breast this will help. But if baby prefers
the easy bottle, she may reject nursing. At this point, I would expect a
3 month old baby to probably be eating 32 ounces of formula per 24 hour
day -- in our culture maybe feeding more (more is better, right?). If
mom is nursing say 3 times but bottlefeeding 32 ounces a day, baby is
probably not taking in much breastmilk. But to confirm intake, go to
test weighing. That is how I guestimate possible milk supply when mom is
bottle feeding formula also.
