Apparently I did exactly what I "YELLED" at everyone else for doing and
didn't read Betsy's post carefully....(Thank you to the person that pointed it
out to me). My digests are coming in an odd order -- I've yet to see my
original post (!) so got a lot of posts about STS and the healthy baby and not
taking it away before I saw Betsy's post, and then didn't read her's carefully.
So -- Mea Culpa for not reading carefully.
And let me reiterate: Pump/hand express every mom whose baby is separated
from her after birth and is unable to go to breast/do skin to skin -- within
that first hour. If the baby is able to be with mom -- STS & lick, nuzzle,
allow baby to nurse. If baby physically can't because of not being with mom,
then get the colostrum so baby has something to eat.
I would concur with Betsy on one thing though -- if the baby is about to be
forcefed formula because he/she hasn't latched on and breastfed, and someone
is getting nudgy about hypoglycemia, and you see the bottle and nipple just
about to be plunged in the baby's mouth -- for goodness sake, help mom hand
express into a spoon and feed it to the baby!!
