I was contacted by a pregnant patient who had gastric bypass surgery 2.5 
years ago.  She says that she did not recover or adapt to the surgery well 
and that she does not absorb nutrients very well.   She is getting iron and B12 
injections and takes other supplements by mouth but anything she takes by 
mouth is not absorbed well.  Her baby is due end of February/first of March.  
She wants to breastfeed but is unsure if she will be able to produce 
nutritionally adequate milk for her infant and is concerned about the potential 
impact on her body.  She currently is not being followed by a 
gastroenterologist.  Her OB is managing her nutritional status.  I would like to 
hear from anyone who has assisted a patient with breastfeeding who has a 
history of gastric bypass surgery.  Thank you.
