Of course a mom with OI can breastfeed. OI is a related set of genetic
disorders of collagen structure, making the matrix that forms bones be
brittle. There is nothing wrong with the calcium metabolism of people
with OI, it's the protein scaffolding of their bones that is abnormal.
Calcium metabolism during breastfeeding and after weaning is actually
more thrifty than during pregnancy, so if she can build a baby, she can
breastfeed. It's a dominant disorder, so the baby may be affected as well.
