I would validate for the mother her continued desire to bf and her infant's
continued need.
I would encourage her to just simply share with her doctor her strong desire
to continue bf and belief in it's benefits for the baby. Often if the mother
will just repeat that she (for example) plans to bf for 6 months and that
weaning is not what she wants to do, the doctor will then look at the info
and treat her accordingly.
Of course, if the mother doesn't feel a good rapport with the doctor, she
can certainly seek another opinion. If she is having depression problems,
she may want to see a psychiatrist if the doctor in question is an OB or
general practice.
I have had some family experience with depression, hospitalization, and
medications and found that meds ALONG WITH psychotherapy (talking with a
professional) work well, and that psychiatrists are more current and
informed about treatment options for depression and the like.
