Hi. I haven't posted in a while, but I have to take exception with
what someone posted regarding women who should not or would not ever
breastfeed. This person referred to "young girls whose pregnancy
resulted from rape" being one of those groups. Why on earth would
you suggest that a woman (of any age) who chooses to have the baby in
spite of horrific circumstances at conception should not breastfeed?
It is fair to say that some women choose not to breastfeed, for a
variety or reasons. It is even fair to say that some SHOULDN'T, also
for a variety of reasons. But to single this group of women out as
if because they were raped they have no business breastfeeding or no
desire to seems insane to me. Once a woman makes the choice to keep
a baby under those circumstances, that baby (and mom for that matter)
deserves the same health and bonding benefits as any other baby.
Maybe I misinterpreted, and admittedly I have been very behind and
didn't read what may have come before this particular post. But to
me it seemed the person was very clear in what they were saying, and
that is very upsetting to me, as someone who was in that situation
many years ago. As professionals, our job is to work with moms where
they are. To suggest or assume that somehow women who have been
raped automatically don't want to breastfeed shows a lot of personal
bias, in my opinion. We should not ascribe what we think we would do
in a situation onto someone else in the same situation.
