Acceptable weight loss is only 7% according to La Leche League 
International. I have worked with many babies who are at 10-12% and who 
can't suck at all, getting jaundiced, very sleepy and not participating 
in feedings, and we have to start intervention and push feedings. I 
guess in the first couple of days they act somewhat alert, but they are 
usually such poor feeders that it develops into really big problems by 
day 4-5.
