I am an active lurker but have never posted before. I felt that this post was
definitely something I wanted to address. I am a CLC, I found that to be an
effective postpartum doula I really needed to further my education in the area
of breastfeeding. I feel I represent very fairly to my clients what I do and
don't do and I never hesitate to refer clients to the local IBCLCs if I feel a
situation is out of my scope and knowledge area. I do feel there is a lot of
educating that needs to be done with breastfeeding moms as they all think I
am the equivalent of an IBCLC until I explain the difference. I actually have
no desire to pursue IBCLC certification because of all the hours, testing, CEU's
etc. that are involved. I feel I can serve my client's needs quite well with the
CLC and happily refer out anything above and beyond my knowledge base. I
think that there is a need for all of us and that are clients are well served by
having both credentials available to them.
