Hello,
I am a La Leche League Leader and small-business owner in Neenah,
Wisconsin, USA. I am not an IBCLC. I am in the process of opening a
parenting store and cafe in my area. The intent of my business is to provide
local mother access to breastfeeding support in the form of education,
community, and products. Along with many other products, I intend to sell
nursing bras, herbal remedies, nipple creams, breast pads, and breast pumps.
I am concerned with my ability to remain Code-compliant as a retailer. If I
choose to sell bottles or nipples along with breastpumps I will be, by definition,
a "distributor or marketer of products within the scope of the Code". I know
that breastfeeding mothers in my area are looking for certain products. For
example, a mother returning to work and pumping and looking for a nipple that
her child will accept from her care-giver.
What are your thoughts on the appropriateness of selling these items to the
general public? Do you believe that nipple shields are within the scope of the
Code as well? I will not do any special promotion of these items or donate
them to any entity or offer reduced any prices. May I still offer them to
customers or will I be inviolation of the Code? As a retailer of products within
the scope of the Code, may I still perform educational functions such as
breastfeeding workshops and parenting classes as long as I don't mention any
of these items?
I have searched the archives, but haven't found any completely relevant
entries. I am sure this group will have lots to offer!!
Thank you,
Adria Ramos
