Hi all
Rachel, this is so interesting. Please tell me more and point me in
the direction of these studies. For years I have been observing that
some babies become complacent about eating . I see this the most with
moms with breast reductions and augmentations. Many of these moms I
have worked with will make JUST enough milk but not a drop more and
their babies sleep through the night very young (co-bedding) and gain
on the slow side even with lots of daily feeding. Their babies are
happy and healthy and lean. I have been looking for good studies to
help explain this phenomena to the mothers I work with to help keep
them on their toes. I speculate that the appetite center of a baby
doesn't have to have a huge amount of weight loss to go into this
"anorexia mode" if the baby is chronically getting low milk feeds. I
would love to see studies done on this.

We know from studies simulating dietary conditions in concentration
camps
that after losing a critical amount of body mass, the appetite center
stops
triggering the individual to eat and they can show the clinical signs of
anorexia nervosa. This baby has lost so much weight that he could
have had
his 'feed me' switch turned off.

Thank you Rachel for bring up a important but not well understood
finding.
