There's been a lot of off-list interest in my International
Breastmilk Project question, so I thought I would follow up here.
I have had a response from Jill Youse. Her response did not answer my
questions. All I know now is that all the milk donated for the
November shipment (six months ago now) went to Africa, and that she
plans to re-write her FAQs (the new content was not elucidated).
My question about what has happened to all the milk donated since
then remains unanswered at this point, as does my question about
whether mothers will continue to be required to sign a Prolacta
proprietary research release waiver when signing up to donate.
I repeat and clarify my questions here in case someone is able to
answer them:
I'm interested to know if there is any transparency in the IBMP
process, specifically:
- What exact proportion of donated milk so far (to May, 2007) has
been shipped to Africa and provided free to children who require it
- What proportion of donated milk has been or will be sold for
profit within the USA
- Whether any donated milk has been or will be used for proprietary,
for-profit patent research
- Whether it is intended that there be transparency in this process
in the future.
I feel very, very strongly about the issue of transparency in
charitable institutions, particular when those efforts involve mining
the products of women's bodies.
