There is no question that the more prospective parents avail themselves to
information regarding breastfeeding, the higher their chance is of success. Our
6 week childbirth series is separate from our single session breastfeeding
class, however, I am chuckling at the concept of offerering the "free"
breastfeeding class. Folks generally LOVE a freebie! I could see this being a
wonderful channel to educate those who are on the fence about breastfeeding.
In my breastfeeding class, I begin by handing out a paper to each attendee
(including the dads) that says
I'd like to breastfeed but______________, or I'd like her to breastfeed
but__________________.
I ask them to write down a completion to that sentence...the first thing that
comes to their minds... and then tuck it in a pocket. If we have not
addressed their concerns by the end of the class, they then have the opportunity to
raise them.
