I think lanolin is way overused, and by the sounds of the apno situation,
yes i think it is overboard. i believe nothing should be used routinely or
prophylactically, although some mothers request their lanolin and i'll give
it but i give my views on it. i agree with one poster who wrote that she
reserves apno for unusually damaged or sore nipples, not something
relatively minor that can be fixed with a good latch.
hydronephrosis: i think it would be reasonable to have informed consent re
the prophylactic abx. several posters have made good cases for the use of
abx, but also some points have been raised that maybe they are not
absolutely necessary. informed consent means what are all the options, and i
think the mother can reasonably ask for studies and discuss the possiblilty
of close surveillance in lieu of abx.
