We are running into a problem in our state where infants of Hispanic mothers
are receiving formula, but not mixing the formula properly. The infants are
suffering from this. We are told that women working in the fields can't
nurse their infants and need to be taught how to mix formula properly. I
wondered if anyone else was running into this problem. For those states that
are dealing with illegal immigrants, how are you helping women continue to
breastfeed? Are the mother's allowed to wear there infants in a sling in the
fields like in their own countries of origin? Are there any Faith based
groups that watch these women's children that could take them to the fields
for feedings? Do you have legislation that would guarantee these women
breaks to feed or pump? Immigrant women have true barriers to nursing there
infants. Do we through up our hands and say mother's milk is not for the
working poor? I'm frustrated and need help. It seems to me the
concentration should be on how to help these women breastfeed not how to
prepare formula correctly. I think the problem may not be that they aren't
being taught how to mix the formula correctly, but that they are trying to
stretch the amount of formula due to poverty and possibly trying to share
there formula with other illegal immigrants.
Any ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated.
