Hello, I am new to this group but thought I would respond to this email chain
since I have personal experience with this topic. I am a lactation educator
working toward IBCLC certification. I myself struggled with these negative
feelings with both of my children. Of all the women I have spoken with that
have experienced these feelings they have all stemmed from sexual
abuse/trauma of some kind (and varying degrees). This can be obvious to
everyone but the BF mom. I BF my son for 16 months and I am still BF my
daughter at 17 months. For me basically any sexual stimulation of the nipples
began an escalation of feelings from negative to uncomfortable to feeling like I
needed to vomit. When I was pregnant with my son I was terrified that when
I BF him these feelings would be stronger, but my experience was that BF lead
my mind away from the thoughts that lead to the feelings (some not
recognized) and the physical stimulation of nursing is unique to breast feeding
in many ways. I was able to nurse without the negative feelings, although I
do notice that I cannot BF for comfort. I notice the suck changes not only in
rhythm but physical feeling at the end of a feeding and this is EXTREMELY
uncomfortable to me and will bring that feeling of unease. I haven’t found this
to be a problem for my children, I just BF on demand and I let them suck until
the nutritive suck was done then continue for as long as I can handle it. If
they need more suck time I used my pinky in the begining. As an aside I
found that all the positive emotions toward my baby while experiencing the
stimulation from BF has lead to slight sexual stimulation not bringing the
negative feelings immediately. Hope this helps and wasn’t too personal.
