I was very surprised a few weeks ago by a conversation I had with an Indian
paediatrician about the knowledge of doctors in India about breastfeeding.
This doctor, who was very knowedgeable about breastfeeding, told me that he
knew of paediatricians in India who did not know what normal breastfed baby
poos looked like which would result in the following scenario....healthy
baby diagnosed with diarrhea, mother told to use infant formula, baby
becomes ill, baby fails to thrive, baby develops kwashiorkor....all because
of lack of knowledge of normal stooling. I was interesting that this doctor
had thought that one of his lecturers was a bit over the top with the
importance that he placed on breastfeeding during his training but that he
no longer thinks so. I'm wondering what role the continuing education on
infant feeding provided by infant formula manufacturers might have on this
ignorance.
I must say that it was a delight to talk to this lovely Dr, wish he
practiced in Australia but I think he is more needed in India!

Sorry, but knowing what stools look like does not seem to be the
> kind of thing a pediatrician should be unaware of.
