I am reading with a lot of interest the debate over the usefulness/validity of
the IBCLC credential, and I'm wondering if any of the MD/IBCLC's out there
want to venture a comment on why they chose to sit for the exam & what
they feel it adds to their knowledge or practice as physicians. I am hoping to
eventually take the exam. Although I am an MD, I am trained as a
psychiatrist, so obviously I don't have the medical training or experience
related to breastfeeding that e.g. a pediatrician or OB would have.
My hope in studying and accumulating hours toward the IBCLC is that it would
be a way to "re-train" and change my practice scope without having to do
another residency (not that there is any such thing as a medical residency in
breastfeeding!). But after this debate I am wondering if it is worth focusing
my efforts on the IBCLC itself, or just following through with whatever clinical
experience, self study, conferences, etc. that seem interesting/relevant to
me.
Any thoughts appreciated!
