Nikki: How true! But...I'm told that "togetherness" is not what they want
and we need to keep those patient satisfaction scores up! A loooonnnng
time ago the hospital used to offer a couple of PP classes for the moms to
attend as they wished on baby care (bath, diaper, etc.) and breastfeeding
right on the Mother/Baby Unit. They were usually pretty well attended,
especially the day of discharge. They were no longer than an hour and moms
brought themselves and their babies (in the bassinet) to a room. It was
not at all unusual for the moms to stay well after the hour "class" just
chatting with each other. I believe moms got a lot of support from each
other during these times, whether they realized it at the time or not.
Nowadays the rooms are all private (which they should be, given
HIPPA/privacy requirements), few families go out into the halls and when
they do, there are no real "conversation areas" available for people to sit
and visit.
Sometimes the "good old days" weren't so bad!
