I've been doing this for too many years and have not encountered it
frequently at all. One mom quit and was happier with bottle. One mom used
a supplementer and was happy to be providing about 1/2 the baby's milk,
another mom just used the more normal functioning breast. You have to
remember that these moms have had body image problems since their teens. Now
that these breasts don't function well is just saying "you're defective "
:-( I go with the line that you've got what God gave you and aren't we
lucky in this day and age that there is a answer (formula). Centuries ago
you would have had to find someone to nurse the baby for you or even watch
your baby decline and die.
It is very sad, especially if no one (like OB or CNM) had warned her after
checking her breasts in a prenatal exam :-( It is really awful and unfair
and negligent if they go into delivery unaware that they might be going to
have a problem. I tell moms with abnormally shaped breasts that you have to
wait and see what they will do and go from there. If they know beforehand,
it gives them time to prepare mentally. Pat in SNJ
