I have heard and/or read about cases in which a mother having preterm labor problems did experience milk leaking and actually milk supply noticeably increasing.
I would counsel the mother not to pump due to the threat of causing labor to increase. I would then call the attending doctor and state that you were contacted for your opinion about how to assist this mother. I would state why I would advise against pump use, and I would offer suggestions on how to care for the mother. I think Jean's suggestions were great. This way, the doctor will get to know you, see you are professional and can help, and learn a bit about lactation. A win/win situation.

Re the mother with unilateral breast pain, I would be thinking maybe costochondritis or some other musculoskeletal situation, as a first line to pursue.
