Subject: Older baby who is now "choking" when brought to breast

Permssion granted to post: Just had a conversation from a mom of a 7 month
old baby who has not had any problems with breastfeeding before. Mom
stated that the baby is now "choking" (coughing/gagging) when she begins to
feed on the left breast, and only left breast. Mom gets worried and tenses
up
when she brings her to the breast because the situation makes her nervous.
Started about 3 weeks ago. My initial questions were: is baby getting
teeth?
No, none have come through yet, but at this age would be normal and the
gums could be sore or swollen. Mom has not given orajel - which could cause
numbing and affect suck/swallow. Neither mom or baby have started any new
meds. Baby has started some solids and we discussed that the tongue and
jaw are used differently to move food around as well as swallow - which may
be affecting nursing (but why on one side?). She is trying different
positions
on that side as well.
Does anyone have insight as to what might be occuring? My next
recommendation would be to refer to OCT.
Thank you
Tina Lavy, MS, IBCLC
