I,too, watched the video clip and was saddened to see that second gal who
said that breastfeeding was "immoral." You know, I run into patients
and/or family like that on occasion and I have learned to just ignore this
mindset. I take a step back from people like that because they are not at
all interested in what I have to say and they are not going to listen (or
learn anything) even if I did attempt to educate them. None of us is ever
going to change people like that and it is a foolish waste of our time to
try and do so.

The first woman they showed who mentioned how woman "take their shirts
off" was just plain ridiculous as we all know that most breastfeeding
mothers don't even show much if any of the breast, much less rip off their
shirts in public. If she is offended, as she mentioned then that is her
problem. Why are we wasting our time getting all bent out of shape over
this?

Comments like those on that video just show people's ignornance. There
will always be people with that mindset. Our best tactic is to be heard in
a quiet, tasteful way, working slowly to effect change, which I do think
can happen. Working with obstetricians and pediatricians is a really good
way to get to the women who need the help: not women like the two who they
interviewed.

Look how far this country has come in attempting to decrease smoking. The
fact that most restaurants now ban smoking shows that change can come.
Maybe the same thing will happen with breastfeeding.

Personally, I thought that particular video clip was excellent! We need
more like that one and less like the one the AD Council did with the
pregnant women riding the mechanical bull. That was neither realistic nor
in good taste. I think that campaign did more to harm breastfeeding than
help it become more popular.

We need to continue to take women where they are and work with those who
will be getting pregnant over the next few years. Personally, I have the
feeling that a lot more women are actually initiating breastfeeding and
far more are considering it. The benefits of breastfeeding meed to be
brought to the groups with the lowest initiation rates.
