It has been a very bad week for me...and today was the Grand Finale:
In a meeting of Nurse Leaders, I brought up an issue that you all would
easily understand:
The Nurses' Day Luncheon was, to my great surprise, catered by (fill in a
formula/pharmaceutical company)...but even MORE upsetting - the educational
activity was their DVD on their new, wonderful xxxx drug.
Due to my experience in previous years, I had known that the meal would be
catered by pharmaceutical companies (usually it is a group of them), so I
timed my arrival to AFTER the lunch would have been served - but was
surprised to see that the educational activity, which until now was given by
nurse-educators, was the DVD!
I didn't make a "scene" during the activity - but later on met with one of
the program coordinators and indicated my dismay - she suggested I bring it
up at the Nurse Leader meeting - which I did. I shared the information from
www.nofreelunch.org and www.banthebags.org as well as Marsha Walker's
excellent information on Marketing (I read to them the comment from a sales
rep's instruction manual that "nurses should be serviced...") BUT
I was resoundingly scolded for being ungrateful, after all the hard work the
program planners had gone to and... "if you want something different, then
find a way to pay for it!"
Then I was SHOWN how THEY ALL carried pens, markers and highlighters and
THEY didn't have any ethical problem with it...after all, THEY can't
prescribe!
Frankly, I was beaten down and just shut up to avoid a real scene (crying in
frustration)...
Sooo - I'm sharing my VERY BAD DAY with my friends....
