I feel like Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, but I feel like saying, "you're
right, and you're also right." Of course, the reply is that they can't both be
right. I suppose I am not so sure. On one hand, I am grateful to see
breastfeeding moms get together for a common cause. It shows solidarity. It
gives me hope that more women are choosing to breastfeed. Maybe so many women
won't feel that they need to HIDE to feed their babies.
However, we also have to deal with the controversy that these rallies
cause. It wasn't too long ago, that several celebrities (Barbara Walters, Bill
O'Rielly, etc) made poor comments about women nursing in public. We live in
a country divided. I am just not sure that nurse-ins at Victoria's Secret
will make a positive impact on the situation. It is events like these that
keep the terms Nursing Nazis and Nursing Militants alive.
As a professional, it is my goal to keep a professional edge on this
experience. I help a large number of women in my community. I do not have a
baby to nurse at the moment, but I have always supported the breastfeeding
mother.
