Jaye Simpson states, "I went to the IBLCE website and this is the short note
posted under the title Scope of Practice:
The IBCLE Board of Directors welcomes the many constructive comments that
have been made regarding the recently published Scope of Practice, which was
the result of two years of extensive international consultation, including
inputs from numerous practicing IBCLCs including the Board of Directors for
the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA). It takes time to
develop a sound Professional Scope of Practice, and the process inevitably
generates a variety of views. The Board is continuing its careful
examination of the Scope of Practice in the light of these comments, which
are certain to contribute to building greater clarity, concision and
consensus around the final product.
Jaye again: Ok - this is nice. But I am still frustrated by the lack of a
time-line to correction and the poorly written SoP is still up on the
website as the one to follow leaving us still with our hands tied.
IBLCE states that it took them 2 yrs to write this. ??? I concur with
Rachel's comments: <<But it is absolutely unbelievable that the document
could get as far as being posted on the website without anyone responsible
for it noticing that it would effectively prevent most of us from working.>>
So, Come on IBLCE Board - what say you to all of us? My and others'
questions deserved to be answered. Who came up with this wording? How
could you not see the position (muzzled, hogtied and unable to practice) you
were putting us all in? How could you possibly miss the vast contradictions
between the Standards of Practice, Code of Ethics and this Scope of
Practice? Where was your legal team?? And lastly, why have only the newly
certified IBCLC's gotten a hard copy of this document?
I don't know folks.I am not holding my breath - in my opinion IBLCE should
have not only posted the note they did but also immediately rescinded the
SoP and put the last one back up in it's place. I wish them luck cleaning
up this mess.I wish us luck in the meantime. It seems the only way we can
protect ourselves is to either not practice or (as Rachel said) voluntarily
suspend out IBCLC certification until such time the SoP is corrected.
Otherwise we leave ourselves in a terribly precarious position.
Wishing everyone a Happy Halloween! This one is a Scary One in more ways
than one."
And, I say, well said, Sister. You are always "well written", to the point
and most generally, right on target! You most definitely are this time!
We MUST continue to stand up for what we believe to be right. We KNOW this
new S of P, CRIPPLES us professionally. So, people PLEASE continue to do
the right thing and WRITE!!!!
