I have seen this happen a few times in the hospital setting. I have even
walked in on dad breastfeeding his baby (numerous occasions). In all
instances, it was handled as a "teaching moment" to gently remind mom of
the need for frequent, early breastfeeds at HER breasts. None of these
babies were having medical difficulties, though... Initially some of the
staff thought we needed to write up an occurance, but after some
discussion, it was clear there was nothing to "write up." The bottom line
is that it IS her baby, and we provided and documented the education we
gave.
