It costs the same to recertify by CERPs as to take the exam (fee paid to
IBLCE). It would be less expensive to recertify by exam than by CERPs for the
IBCLC because (a) you have to pay for all the CERPs and (b) you have to pay
the fee to recertify.
Taking the exam for the second or third time is not difficult. While I
would fail my nursing boards in a heartbeat, I work with breastfeeding anywhere
from 50 to 75 hours a week when everything is added together. Taking a test
is not hard. Getting 100% is hard. Getting 90% is moderately difficult.
Passing is a piece 'o cake. But no one knows your score except you and the
IBLCE. Look at the percentage of the retakers who passed over the past few
years, and don't be nervous about it.
The biggest question is, given the problems we are seeing -- do you
recertify or not?
Jan Barger, RN, MA, IBCLC
