"Children who were first exposed to cereals after 6 months of age had
an increased risk of wheat allergy compared with children first
exposed to cereals before 6 months of age (after controlling for
confounders including a family history of allergic disorders and
history of food allergy before 6 months of age)."
The lead author is saying that this indicates babies should be
started on cereal grains around 4 months. This article about the
study http://www.babycenter.com/news/?id=533062#story gives more
details than the abstract above. The number of babies who developed
allergies was very small, just 16 (1% of the study population).
It is not clear whether breastfeeding was considered as a variable.
Other recent research points to a protective effect against gluten
intolerance if the baby is still being breastfed at the time of
introduction.
Does anyone have access to the full text who can fill us in on the
study design?
