I've had many moms in my practice pump for one or even 2 years without
any breast discomfort or damage. Something is wrong if this mom is
having pain and discoloration. Check flanges size, suction/vacuum
settings and use a vacuum gauge to make sure the pump is functioning
properly. If it is, have her change pumps or even brands to try to find
a better "fit". I almost always observe the mother pumping during a
consult, especially if mom has a special needs baby and will likely be
pumping long term.
