I had a run-in with one of our OBs several weeks ago when he came into a
mom's room to announce he would be doing the baby's circ right then as I was
answering the parents' (and grandmother's) questions about whether the circ
would affect breastfeeding. When he made his announcement, the mother
looked at him and told him she did not want the circ done that day - they
wanted it done the next day. He was not at all happy. The parents could see
he was upset and asked me what they should do. I told them that the
decision was theirs, as it was their baby. Grandma also told them this. They
did end up refusing the circ that day. Of course, the OB was waiting for me
when I came out of the room. He was upset because he was being
inconvenienced - he had time then, and felt he would be "rushed" the next
day. Did I have any RESEARCHED-BASED literature to support what I had
been telling the parents? It took me 4 hours, but I did put together a packet
of several articles/papers that I found on the Internet and handed it to him at
the nurses' station the next day. The nurses told me he had been really
mouthing off about this to them, but he did take the packet with him and
stated: "I guess I have some reading to do." He has not said anything to me
about this since that day, but I have noticed that he now waits until the baby
is over 24 hours old (most of our OBs are doing circs < 24hrs and some
routinely circ <12 hours!). He has also been going out of his way to greet me
cordially in the hallway.
I am in the process of getting myself on the agenda for an upcoming OB
medical staff meeting, so that I can present this to the entire OB staff.
