There is a tale from the Civil War that Matthew Brady had a wagon load of  
glass plate negatives shot at the Battle of Bull Run, but when things  started 
going bad for the Union troops, he rushed so fast to get away that the  wagon 
spilled over and he lost all the negatives. After the battle, nothing  could be 
found of his negatives. Someone out there probably is sitting on a gold  mine 
of history.
