I know we're getting away from breastfeeding a bit - but I thought I'd just
mention a program that is quite successful here in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.
It's called the Garden Fresh Box, and here's how it works. For $15, you get
a box of fruit and vegetables once a month - from local farmers where
possible. It's much more than you could get for the money if you went to the
stores, and the quality and variety are both very good. Included in the box
are instructions for storing the food and several recipes using the items in
the box (the recipes are usually simple but in my experience very tasty). (A
single person can also order a smaller box for, I think, $10.) (Last month's
box had, if I can remember it all: kale, leaf lettuce, onions, parsnips,
turnips, potatoes, sweet potatoes, apples, tangerines, lemons, brussels
sprouts, celery and carrots.) The whole program is organized by the local
health unit. Boxes are shipped to the homes of volunteers in each
neighbourhood so that people don't have to go far to pick theirs up. There's
no income test to participate - anyone who wants to can sign up.
I think this is a practical way to make it easier for families to add more
fruits and vegetables to their diets, and it benefits local farmers too.
