I really like Dr. Wight's reasoning for using these special formulas. I think the main reason your co-worker is recommending them is to avoid unnecessary exposure to cow's milk or soy proteins. However, I believe that alimentum (and nutramigen) are hypoallergenic but not truly elemental. And therefore there is still some exposure to potential allergens. I believe Neocate is an elemental formula and perhaps pregestimil too. I remember using pregestimil alot in the Nicu I worked in years ago in New Orleans, for the many long-term babies we used to have then. Short gut syndromes and the like.
I might try to get the chief of nursery to go this route with our breastfed babies, it just might make an impact on the moms and nurses.
