My classes are similar to Naznin's.
I like the participants to feel in control of the agenda. I usually ask the
them why they feel the need to attend a class - after all breastfeeding is
natural isn't it? This usually starts a list of common problems and various
questions they want answered. I also ask why they think mothers run into
problems and this can lead to discussing support, education, myths etc. I
make a list on the board to make sure all is addressed by the end of 2
hours. "Pain" and "not enough milk" are invariably on the list and these I
prioritise. ("Pain" is most often the first word from the participants!)
The main message I highlight is that breastfeeding should not hurt. We
still have far too few staff members who can recognise an effective and
comfortable latch and mothers have an expectation that breastfeeding will be
sore so often do not say anything.
As I feel the "how to" is a priority, I do not specifically address the
"advantages", but invariably there is ample opportunity to slip in the odd
research-based gem re not breastfeeding. The Dads especially seem to like
these. I do add that there are no guarantees - some of us were bottle-fed
and appear to be just fine and breastfeed babies can of course become ill,
but the statistics are impressive.
I show a "how to" video and also "self attachment". I like to include
something on skin-to-skin and how to calm a distressed baby.
