Others answered on the bili blanket or light issue. I would like to
address jaundice. Please make sure your baby is actively sucking and
having lots of large bowel movements. If your baby latches and falls
right to sleep, do not see this as transferring milk. Breastfeeding
experts are beginning to call it "Lack of Breastmilk Jaundice". Meaning
sleepy babies who do not suck are getting jaundiced from lack of intake
which creates lack of bowel movements. Your baby should be nursing every
few hours or 10X in 24 hours. Make sure baby is latched on well with the
chin smooshed into the breast and the nose tipped out, the head is
usually flexed back just a little bit. Watch that the baby actively
sucks, and this means long repetitions of sucking with short pauses
before going again (10 or more sucks/jaw movements in a row before
pausing). Listen for swallows when your milk becomes more abundant, or
about day 3. Baby should have one BM the first day, two BMs the second,
and three BMs the third. By day 4, baby should be having 3-4 large
yellow bowel movements every 24 hours. If baby gets formula, the bowel
movement count will not be accurate as to breastmilk intake. Your baby
should not lose much weight, 7% or less, and start regaining weight
around day 4-5. Back to birth weight by day 10, day 14 at the latest,
and then gain 6 ounces per week after that. Ask the midwife to weigh the
baby naked in a dry diaper when she comes back each day after birth to
check the baby (or if you go to the pediatrician, weigh without clothing
and ask what the weight is so you know).
