YES! YES! YES! I agree with Jennifer and Melissa.
Finally, we are beginning to see what breastfeeding is all about: The right
of every offspring to be fed by its mother's mammary glands because it is
the biological norm. That is so easy to understand about kittens, puppies,
foals, cubs, etc. Only humans would come up with an idea that they could
concoct a substance and put it in a container, and think that was better
than breastfeeding. Is that an ego thing? Humans used their fantastic
brains incorrectly and came up with the idea of ABM as an appropriate
substitute for what is real; with the idea that something that is extremely
odd, not breastfeeding, is normal. Now we have to struggle hard to convince
those great minds to accept the humbling idea that we are part of the animal
kingdom and need to go back to what is normal for mammals.
And I hope that if we ever have another breastfeeding awareness campaign,
the mantra will be: Every Child Is Born with the Right to Breastfeed.
(Not: Every BABY WAS Born to Be Breastfed - Breastfeeding IS here to stay;
it is not something that was only normal in the past and only normal for
babies.)
I also hope that the powers that be come up with some better ads to show the
risks of not breastfeeding instead of the silly/hard-to-get ones we saw the
first time around. I want them to show that some children have ended up in
an oxygen tent because ABM caused such severe allergic reactions that they
were dying. Some of you remember my story of a five-month-old girl whose
life/health was saved by my helping her mother relactate. I only saw that
once in over 33 years of practice and I don't ever want to see it again.
