directed at all of you amazing women   out there who have wonderful ideas and 
suggestions but do not go any  farther  than putting them on Lactnet.

You are right, and 10 years ago, I did write to IBLCE on my exam sheet and  
in detail, as I did again this year.  My hope is that with an increase in  the 
number of professionals discussing this, the issue might be taken seriously.  
I do not think that one should have to be on the Board to be listened to by  
one's own organization. Having been on many Boards over the years, I feel as  
Board members we need to regularly ask for feedback and show people their  
opinions have been heard. Although I did get a response from my feedback about  
the second credential issue, I do not feel that IBLCE has been open about  
discussing the recertification issue. I may have missed it, but did IBLCE ever  
polls IBCLCs for their opinions about recertification by exam? They  seem to have 
made up their minds and that's that. I have heard the idea that  because we 
are a new profession and information changes rapidly, we need  recertification 
by exam. In the prosthetic profession, which is not as young but  experiences 
many changes all the time  in terms of surgical techniques,  type and uses of 
materials, rehabilitation strategies, etc. they recertify by  CERPS at 
conferences and CERPS from self-adminstered exams based on  articles in their 
professional journal. We could certainly do the same. As Pat  said, it is odd how the 
scoring turns out with written exams. I took the test  after 10 years, scored 
only a few points higher, even though I feel like I know  so much more than I 
did then ( and sometimes feel sorry for my earlier  clients!) have learned a 
lot, and  I still have a lot to learn, but taking  a test isn't going to 
measure it, apparently.
