L. reuteri (acidophilus) improves colicky symptoms in breastfed infants
within 1 week of treatment.
As posted in this months Pediatrics Journal, vol.119, number 1, e124
abstract.
Summarized as following: "ninety breastfed colicky infants were
assigned randomly to receive either the probiotic L reuteri or
simthicone each doay for 28 days. All the mothers avoided cow's milk
in their diet.
95% of the babies responded well to the probiotics versus 7% with
simethicone, which suggst that probiotics may have a role in the
treatment of infantile colic.
see: www.pediatrics.org fpr full article.
Just thought it might be of some interest with the recent string
regarding formulas putting probiotics in them.
We sell probiotics here in our pediatric clinic and have recommended
them for use with diarrhea and the like, but I haven't yet
recommended them for treatment of colic - or excessive gas.
Interesting! My pedi's state that they safely use probiotics with
preemies, so they would be fine to use as supplements with newborns.
