I've found that the magic trigger is the baby's chin. When the chin
touches the breast, the baby opens and latches (as long as their tongue
comes forward sufficiently to touch the breast). So I tell moms chin to
the margin of the areola, nose to nipple, and wait for baby to open wide
and lunge, then snuggle him in a bit. Of course one might need to adapt
these instructions for different size moms, but on average it works.
