As far as I can tell, if we follow the new SoP section
about "Contradicting or ignoring the advice of a client's health care
provider," we could very likely place ourselves in direct violation of our
Code of Ethics. Particularly these sections:
7. Base her/his practice on scientific principles, current research, and
information.
8. Take responsibility and accept accountability for personal competence
in practice.
11. Provide sufficient information to enable clients to make informed
decisions.
24. IBCLCs must adhere to those provisions of the International Code of
Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes which pertain to health care workers.
There could be more conflicts, but these four jumped out at me with a
quick glance. I think IBLCE should be reminded that our Code of Ethics is,
as is the ethics code for all professions, the bottom line.
