I think that the mother has the right to call this assault by whatever term
she choses. If she came to me with this situation I would encourage her to
report this to the authorities (police or hospital). If she did not want to
do this, I would provide support to her and and also ask if I could present
this info to the hospital.
The big buzz word in hospitals is "safety." If this were brought to my
hospital as a patient complaint, the culprit would be put on probation or
fired. If the complaint were brought forward by another person, the
information would be brought to a safety action committee which would
correct the situation. In a case like this there would probably be some
kind of educational presentation.
I would give a presentation that relayed the mother's description using a
non-sensational title and with the emphasis on safety. Most of the people
in the audience will be innocent of causing "nipple rape" and will be quite
horrified. They also will probably be quite receptive to alternatives to
latch other than the 1,2,3,RAM method they may be presently using.
If the hospital blew me off, I would present the info and pictues to the
Board of Nursing.
