Hi, on the eve of the launch of the WHO growth charts, I thought it was
timely to remind you all of two papers published recently.
Sachs M Dykes F & Carter B (2005). Weight monitoring of breastfed babies in
the UK – centile charts, scales and weighing frequency. Maternal and Child
Nutrition 1, 63-76.
Sachs M Dykes F & Carter B (2006) Weight monitoring of breastfed babies in
the UK – interpreting, explaining and intervening. Maternal and Child
Nutrition 2, 3-18.
The journal (which is new and therefore not yet indexed on medline) can be
found at: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/journal.asp?ref=1740-8695
You will have to arrange access via your usual provider.
These papers review a wide range of literature, concentrating on the UK,
although using much from other western contexts. (They are based on
theliterature search for my PhD). I know cultural practices of weight
monitoring differ from country to country, and UK practice will be different
from that in the USA, however, some of the issues may be transferable.
I also have an editorial appearing in the June edition of the Journal of
Child Health Care, which is a nursing journal, which will be entitled:
Routine weighing of babies: does it improve feeding and care?
Although I sound many notes of caution about viewing the WHO charts as 'the
answer' to the problems breastfeeding women have encountered, I am looking
forward to seeing them and to the discussions (already hotting up here in
the UK) that they will trigger. The pre-publicity/background briefing stuff
I have seen does place them in a really brilliant context, arguing the case
for universal use for all babies, however fed and in whichever country.
Magda Sachs, PhD
