We were discussing yesterday at our monthly unit meeting ways to increase
immediate sts care after delivery. The L&D nurses were saying that "most"
moms did not want to do it. We explored how this concept was being
presented to the parents and learned there were some ways we could change
verbiage and practice on the staff's part. Our director suggested that the
LC go in while the mom was in early labor and introduce the concept of sts
and encourage the mom to accept the baby onto her bare chest immediately
after delivery. This might work, as we do very few "unscheduled" births in
our institution. My thinking is that I would make rounds in L&D daily on
the moms who were there for an induction and talk briefly with them about
the importance of sts care for successful initiation of breastfeeding. We
give every mom a short tri-fold pamphlet on sts care that I wrote several
years ago as part of their admission packet to the PP unit and I was
thinking of handing her this pamphlet at my first contact with her with the
hope that she (and her partner) would spend a few moments reading this.
Is anyone else doing this or something similar in their L&D unit? Have you
found it successful? Have you encountered any problems?
Thanks for your input.
