This is one of those times I wish I had a digital camera that could take
good close ups and I could email to one of you great ones who could look and say
"this is" and solve the problem!
Mom breastfeeding first baby, vaginal delivery, full term, etc. Zero
medications. She contacted me at 7 weeks...after someone finally told her this is
not supposed to hurt!!! She has what at first looks like blebs. More than
one. They seem to come ad go with a feeding. Also, if you can visualize the
outer rim of the nipple face, there is what looks and feels like a callous in
a crescent shape. Mother reports no pain when touching the area. Says right
after nursing or showering it is almost gone, but then appears again as her
skin dries.
The nipple does have a lipstick shape when the baby comes off. Mom is
working on correcting that. OR she is thinking of pumping and feeding her milk
with a bottle instead. She is so distressed that she can't decide. We
discussed nothing is in stone, she can do what she needs to do now to manage and
work on breastfeeding again later if she wants. We have talked through all her
options, and I want to be as supportive as possible whatever she decides.
Her pain brings her to tears with every feeding.
I have a few thoughts about what is causing this, and I want to hear other
thoughts to see if I am on the right track. I have already made a few phone
calls to find her a breastfeeding knowledgeable dermatologist and gave her
some names and numbers.
Now...can someone please remind me that even though I have spent a week with
difficult latching babies and lots of creased nipples and damage along the
stripe with bleeding, scabs, etc. that breastfeeding is normal, it is not
supposed to hurt, and many women can in fact breastfeed comfortably and
simply....It's been a busy week...
Take care,
