In light of the discussion on reasons to breastfeed, I wonder how you, or if you, discuss WHY to breastfeed in Prenatal breastfeeding classes. I am sometimes torn. Should I discuss benefits in the class? Usually the people who choose to come already are "sold" on breastfeeding. Then again I like to mention some of the not so typical health (and other) benefits so if things do get a little tough that the Mom's stick with it because formula is not "just as good", and given time they will see and feel the relationship of breastfeeding. As I see my 3 adult children (both sons and a daughter) embrace the idea of breastfeeding, it is what they saw and were exposed to when they were young. Many in our class did not have that exposure. Their exposure was bottle feeding and they have to learn about and experience breastfeeding through our information and their own experiences.
