La Leche League has a pamphlet on Breastfeeding a Baby with Down
Syndrome that has some good tips.
The most important things about breastfeeding a baby with DS are:
give good support, baby is likely to be floppy.
feed frequently and spend time skin to skin, baby is likely to be very
sleepy.
if baby has trouble attaching because the tongue is in the way, or has
trouble staying on the breast due to the low tone, a nipple shield might
help.
if baby has a cardiac issue, feed even more frequently to allow baby to
get sufficient calories without overtaxing the cardiorespiratory capacity.
monitor baby's growth, use a chart for babies with DS.
mom can express milk to use as a supplement if baby is not capable of
doing it all alone.
