Thank you~ I totally agree. While I personally have no problem with
reporting, I did go on to say that we need to remember the word International.
Thank you so much for the example of just how this could be a problem.
I do actually ask about lochia flow and healing after surgery, I just do not
'inspect' or diagnose infection. If the answers lead me to consider
retained placenta or infection, I refer them to their hcp. But, again, you are
right, the knowing is important and does have the potential to impact
breastfeeding.
Thank you so much for your thoughts. I am very concerned that the future of
IBCLCs as they are today are being threatened. I do not for one minute
believe that the level of intelligence sitting on the BOD did not know exactly
what they were doing. They may not have expected the outcry and dissent, but
they are very intelligent professional persons and they indeed knew exactly
what the wording would mean for every single non medical private practicing
IBCLC in the USA. And, now, from the posts of our members from other countries,
we can see the impact on the international level is also very real.
I think this needs to be rescinded immediately. When they have worked out
the problems, they can put it back out, but as it stands now, we in the
private practice community are not able to practice in the best interest of our
clients, and sorry, but the clients come first. We need to be protecting mothers
and babies and breastfeeding. That is who we are and what we do. It needs
to be the ultimate focus of our scope of practice and in all things, it needs
to be paramount.
Best,
Pam MazzellaDiBosco, IBCLC, RLC
