We have a baby in our NICU where the mom has tested positive for
marijuana use. States she used it just one time shortly before she
delivered. (Yes, we're aware that that may not be true.) Social
services obviously is aware and proper documentation/referrals as
required.
Our NICU is very pro-breastfeeding. Our Neo's really believe in
promoting/supporting breastfeeding and want this young woman to
breastfeed, as is her desire. Plans are in place to follow mom's
bloodwork to assure she is refraining from future use, etc. But, a
question for our Neos...
Does anyone have a policy that outlines how to handle when illicit drug
use is identified in the mom who she wants to breastfeed?.... Do you
have a consent of some type that she signs that indicates that the risks
posed to her infant if she continues to use drugs and breastfeed?...
Our neos really want her to breastfeed (not only for the health benefits
but also hoping it will help her with her mothering/nurturing skills).
But they obviously do not want to create harm for the infant.
If anyone has anything they do or a formal policy/consent, I'd
appreciate it.
Thanks!
